TOUR MATCH REPORTS

Game 1

HPCC vs Brisbane Grammar School, Northgate Oval, Brisbane

The BGS side was made up of 14 & 15 year old players who were physically much bigger & stronger than our predominantly 12 & 13 year old squad.  The tour opener was an opportunity for HPCC to play all 14 players to get the whole squad into the tour and out on the park after a long winter of training indoors.  The fantastic Oval at BGS was first class and a real thrill for the squad to play at –the pitch was hard and flat and the boys couldn’t believe the pristine nature of the pitch.
BGS batted first which gave HPCC a chance to be a team unit together which settled the nerves a wee bit but it was obvious there were a few anxious faces walking out to field.

These nerves were used extremely well by the entire squad and a very clinical and well executed 17overs in the field followed restricting BGS to 55/2 at the 17 over mark.  The next 17 overs saw the BGS side flex their muscle and HPCC found themselves under pressure and felt not only Queensland heat along with a stiff breeze but also the increasing run rate which saw the total racing to 160/5 after 34 overs.  After some constructive encouraging words from coaches Bryan Young & Alistair Jolley, HPCC fought back with a fantastic finishing 16 overs to pull things back to 229/8 after 50 hard overs in temperatures over 25 degrees with a stiff breeze.  Stand out performers were opening bowlers Brendan Lee (1-20 off 8 overs) and Bradley Milne (1-29 off 8 overs) who bowled well as a partnership and very well supported by Liam Hill (1-14 off 6 overs), Alex Francis-Dittmer (2-33 off 6 overs) and Chad Crenfeldt-Smith (2-32 off 7 overs) plus both wicketkeepers Glenn Phillips & Daniel Young kept wickets very well leading a sharp and efficient fielding effort which is a feature of the squad for the whole tour.

The run-chase by HPCC started promisingly with the loss of 1 wicket for 41 off 12 overs but unfortunately then lost wickets at regular intervals stifling the run-rate.  The BGS bowlers provided a real test especially with extra pace and bounce but the HPCC batsmen never flinched and showed true grit and excellent technique throughout. An excellent 80 run partnership between Taine Jolley (34 off 75 balls) and Glenn Phillips (42 off 65 balls) was the highlight but unfortunately both were dismissed within 4 runs of each other virtually putting an end to HPCC’s chances.  A nice ‘cameo’ from Dale Phillips (25 off 36 balls) helped HPCC to a respectable 177/9 off 50 overs.

Result: Win to BGS by 52 runs.

Game 2

HPCC vs Sunshine Coast, Tewantin Oval, Noosa

Again, the opposition were a good 2 years older than HPCC and they ‘dwarfed’ the HPCC players physically.  HPCC fielded first on a wicket that had a little bit of movement in it and a fantastic bowling performance followed. Lee (1-27 off 7 overs) and Milne (2-20 off 8 overs) started the trend and then Sebastian McCole (2-14 off 7 overs) and Alex Francis-Dittmer (3-20 off 10 straight overs) kept the batsmen in check and restricted them to 157 all out in 45 overs.  The fielding was again sharp and a satisfying effort in the field in 32-34 degrees of heat!!

The run chase began cautiously and the SC opening bowlers provided the most pace and hostility the HPCC had ever faced – coaches Young & Jolley were very proud of the way the top order did not shirk their responsibility by showing excellent technique to try and blunt the onslaught.  3-29 after 16 overs was not a true reflection of the hard work completed by Dominic Blake and Daniel Young.  It was Glenn Phillips (54 off 61 balls) and Taine Jolley (13 off 52 balls) who again benefited from the semi-foundation and shared another useful partnership of 62.  The equation for HPCC was only 34 runs off 11 overs with 6 wickets in hand and Phillips & Jolley still at the wicket – unfortunately a lack of composure saw HPCC stumble to 145 all out in 46 overs.  This was the lowest moment of the tour and the boys knew they had let a royal chance to win their first game on tour against the odds and learnt a lot about ‘closing a game out’.

Result: Win to SC by 13 runs.

Game 3

HPCC vs Sunshine Coast Grammar School

A fantastic ground greeted HPCC and probably the hottest day so far in a sheltered oval.  This game saw the opposition be of a more even age predominantly only 1 year older.   HPCC elected to bat and a chance for the other top order batsman to prove themselves on tour. A very even paced innings followed with Abrar Alam (22 off 50 balls) showing the improvement in his game opening the innings in fine style.  Daniel Young (54 retired off 86 balls) and Dale Phillips (52 retired off 79 balls) stepped up to the mark with a terrific 105 run partnership to set up a total which should have seen HPCC exceed 260 but another lack of composure from the middle to lower order saw HPCC lose 5-27 between overs 34 to 42 finishing at 230 all out off 42 overs.  Another harsh lesson learnt!

Coaches Young & Jolley stressed to HPCC that they were 20-30 runs short and that nothing short of an aggressive and clinical display in the field would be required.  HPCC rose to the challenge with an excellent bowling & fielding display.  With Lee & Milne resting for this match it was McCole (1-34 off 9 overs) & Hill (1-31 off 9 overs) opening up and then Crenfeldt-Smith (3-25 off 8 overs) and Kanav Dogra (2-37 off 8 overs) really put the brakes on SCGS.  HPCC strangled the run chase and were thrilled to post their first win of the tour by dismissing SCGS for 183 in the 43rd over.

Result: Win to HPCC by 47 runs.

Game 4

HPCC vs Caloundra, Caloundra Oval

Caloundra elected to bat on a beautiful Caloundra Oval in very hot conditions and a wicket made for scoring runs.

The Lee (0-17 off 9 overs) & Milne (1-32 off 8 overs) opening show was back in action setting the tone for the HPCC effort in the field.  But it was Francis-Dittmer (0-11 off 6 overs), Hill (0-23 off 6overs), Crenfeldt-Smith (0-15 off 5 overs) and spinners Liam Winn (2-23 off 6 overs) & Kanav Dogra (0-28 off 7 overs) who shared an excellent bowling performance restricting Caloundra to 166 in 50 overs.

The total was always very short of HPCC’s capabilities with Alam (50 retired off 67 balls), Young (33 retired off 49 balls) and Winn (25 off 50 balls) getting HPCC home in the 41st over.

Result: Win to HPCC by 7 wickets.

Two wins in a row and the execution of skills had increased over the last 4 games which was a goal for the whole squad.

Game 5

HPCC vs St Columbians College

The last game of the tour and the squad was fired up to make it 3 wins in a row and to finish the tour on a high note.

The wicket was hard to read and looked a little ‘up and down’ so HPCC decided to take first use of the batting conditions.  Glenn Phillips (50 off 90 balls) was given an opportunity to open the innings and responded with his second 50 of the tour but unfortunately suffered the same mistake of ‘not going on’ and getting out soon after – a fine innings nonetheless in not ideal conditions.  Milne (16 off 50 balls) was provided with a batting opportunity at 4 and he took it enjoying the chance to bat for a period of time.  Some useful contributions from Winn and Crenfeldt-Smith saw HPCC post 183/8 off 50 overs.

HPCC continued their excellent form and showed great professionalism in maintaining their standards in the field and with the ball in hand.  St Columbians were bundled out for 79 in the 36th over in what was a sub-standard display by them.

However, nothing could be taken away from HPCC who were merciless in their destruction of St Columbians.  Milne (2-9 off 5 overs), Lee (2-2 off 5 overs), Francis- Dittmer (1-13 off 4 overs), Crenfeldt-Smith (1-0 off 3 overs), Dogra (2-11 off 4 overs) and Jolley (2-7 off 5 overs) created the demise of St Columbians.

Result: Win to HPCC by 104 runs.

SUMMARY
A fantastic tour for HPCC (3 wins from 5 games) with the 2 losses against opposition 2 years their senior.  Different weather, ground and pitch conditions coupled with travel and a first ‘tour’ provided a terrific cricket and life experience for all the boys.
The fantastic support of several parents traveling to the venues provided the boys with a great environment in which they enjoyed.

SECURITY FIRM SECURES NAME RIGHTS
By JOHN LAZO-RON

The Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club’s inaugural under-14 Aussie tour is now officially known as the MS Security HPCC under-14 boys’ tour to Australia.  Next year’s cricketing trip got a new name on board when the naming rights competition was drawn at the club last week.  The draw had between 80 and 90 sponsors in it, with each investing $100 towards the tour.

Owner of MS Security, Mike Shaw, is delighted to gain naming rights and is grateful to be picked out from the draw.  “I was rapt to win the naming rights to the tour,” says the local businessman.  “MS Security has always been proactive when it comes to sponsorship and supporting our territories. I’m just happy to be helping out.”

Member of the club’s president team Steve Lloyd, who also joined the $100 club through software solutions company Navitas, like Shaw, says the idea was just about helping the boys make it across the Tasman.  “I think it’s an excellent initiative,” says Lloyd. “I’m always pleased to give back to the club that I’ve got so much out of and it’s not a big ask, 100 bucks, really.”

The club’s premier captain Jamie Newth also made an appearance on the night not just as a supporter due to his role, but also as his business Jamie Newth Consulting was a contender in the naming rights draw.  “As a premier player and being part of a team that is really well-supported by the club and as a player who has been through all the age-group champs in this club for a long time, I think we have an obligation to help others out like Bryan (Young) who has put a lot of energy into something here,” says Newth. “It’s just another opportunity to give back, and through my business I can do that, but also as a player.”

Despite not winning the naming rights competition, Newth says it’s not what it’s all about.  “I don’t think anyone was in it really to get the rights. It’s cool and fun and great how they still recognise us with our logos on the team boards.   “But the values behind it in not just developing cricketers but men, is great.”

Tour leader and former Black Caps opening batsmen Bryan Young was thankful for all the support the touring party has received from sponsors, which he says contributed about $11,000 to their cause.

The MS Security under-14 team will make a 12-day trip across the Tasman where they’ll play matches against Queensland age-group sides next September.

Sponsors club created for cricket tour abroad
By JOHN LAZO-RON

TIMES may be tough right now due to the global financial crisis, but local businesses are still showing a strong will to get behind their local sports teams.

SHOW ME THE MONEY: The Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club under-14 2009 Australian tour has received support from many, including Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori. Photo supplied.

The Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club under-14 2009 Australian tour, which was announced in July, has been going through a major process of raising funds for the trip.

Part of the tour charter is that the players have to raise the money themselves. They’ve run the sausage sizzles and car washes, but recently have been looking for some larger sponsors.

The path to finding sponsors has been difficult with the economic downturn not in their favour.

After having to review their fundraising options, the tour team came up with the idea of the $100 club.

The $100 club provides an opportunity for firms to buy a $100 ticket, which is tax-deductible, and they become an official tour sponsor.

In mid-December all members of the $100 club will go into a draw to see which business gets the official naming rights for the tour.

While only one company will have naming rights, all other sponsors will still remain part of the tour and be acknowledged and invited to special events that will precede the tour starting next October.

Tour leader and former Black Cap Bryan Young says he’s been delighted with the response from the business community.

“We’re impressed and grateful,” says Young. “The support of the local community has been awesome; $100 doesn’t sound a lot but $100 is $100.

“We’re looking to bring the business community together and closer to the club. So naturally we’d like to invite the businesses to be involved with the tour.”

To date 90 sponsors have joined up. The tour team hopes to get 100 to 120 sponsors by the first week of December closing date.

Young says they’re after up to $50,000 to take a team abroad. They’re hovering around $13,000 at this stage, but they’re on track.

07 October 2008
It was announced today to the entire squad that the destination and venue for the tour to Australia has been confirmed. The tour party will travel to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in September/October 2009.

Tour coach, Bryan Young is excited about confirming the venue - "Caloundra Cricket Club has first class facilities with a dedicated cricket ground and outer oval, good practice facilities and the ground also has lights for night games and there is a very real chance the boys will get to play under lights which would be very special" says Young.

The opposition is also very important to make the tour as competitive and worthwhile as possible. "We have been fortunate to make some great contacts and we will be playing a mix of Queensland Age Group sides, Sunshine Coast Rep sides and what they call a Scorchers XI" says Young. "We all know how competitive Australians are and we expect the opposition we come across to be no different" smiled Young.

First junior tour across the Tasman
By JOHN LAZO-RON

• Howick and Pakuranga Times

FOURTEEN of Howick Pakuranga’s top under-13 cricketers will get to showcase their skills in Australia next year.

They’ve been selected for the club’s inaugural junior tour across the Tasman, a 12-day trip where they’ll play five matches against Queensland age-group sides.

The 14 boys went through a major selection process. They were originally thinned down from a group of 83 players who were competing for a tour spot.

Selector and former Black Caps all-rounder Dipak Patel chose 16 players (two are non-travelling reserves) after putting a group of 37 boys through an eight-week training programme.

The September 2009 tour is part of Howick Pakuranga’s vision of sending an under-13 team every second year to Australia and to also become this country’s most elite cricket club.

Leading the way forward for the club is another ex-Black Cap, opening batsman Bryan Young.

He’s thrilled with the opportunity to develop younger players on the foundation tour to Australia and says there’ll be many more trips to come.
“It’s very exciting. It’s going to be an on-going thing. It’s not just a one-off,” Young says.
“From a club perspective we’re looking to be New Zealand’s pre-eminent and best club. That’s our vision and part of that is to provide opportunities like this for our young up and coming players.”
Despite cricket being the main focal point of the tour Young says it’s also about turning boys into men.
“It’s not just about the cricket. We’re looking to develop young men in terms of life and people skills.
“Cricket is the focus but we see it as more widespread than that. We’re also trying to provide a culture where the boys are working for their opportunity.
“The parents of the lucky 16 selected are pulling together with the kids and are going to be working very hard in terms of fundraising over the next 14 months to get the money required,” Young says.
At a recent launch for the trip the 16 were handed a tour cap with their initials embroidered on, presented by ex-Black Caps Kerry Walmsley and Brooke Walker.
Also at the launch there was a video message from Howick Pakuranga’s Black Caps all-rounder Kyle Mills, who was filmed standing on the player’s balcony at the home of cricket, Lords.
Mills gave a good luck message and congratulated the players on their selection. The 16 junior tourists have already started a major fundraising campaign and are inviting the community to be involved.

New Tour Concept Announced

HPCC U14 TOUR TO AUSTRALIA 2009

HPCC is delighted to announce that a selected group of U14 (Year 8) players will tour to Queensland, Australia in September/October 2009.

The vision is to create an on-going tradition in the club by sending an U14 team to Australia every 2 years and to develop a reciprocal arrangement with an Australian club/organisation so that we receive a visiting team every other year.

The initiative was first thought of by out-going Junior Chairman and recently awarded 'Clubman of The Year 2007/8', Roger Dunn.  Roger planted the idea with fellow Board Member and Former NZ Black Cap, Bryan Young.  Bryan explored the opportunity, reported back and received the full support of the board to go ahead with the tour.

Capping Ceremony at HPCC Clubhouse

An official 'Tour Launch' evening was held for the players and parents on July 2nd which included an inspirational visual presentation and a very special video message from current Black Cap & HPCC Member, Kyle Mills - Kyle sent the video message from the balcony of the NZ Dressing Room at Lords during the recent tour of England.

A special 'capping ceremony' was held with each player receiving their tour cap presented by former NZ Black Caps & HPCC Members, Kerry Walmsley & Brooke Walker.

Club Chairman Graham Dennis also addressed the boys and their parents, "you could say the boys have been spoilt with international support with Dipak, Kerry, Brooke & Kyle being involved plus their coach is Bryan - so not many clubs can provide that level of support for their developing cricketers".  "It was a fantastic evening and hopefully is the start of a proud tradition here at HPCC" said Graham.
